This article, written by Joseph Kung, addresses China's condolences offered upon the death of Pope John Paul II and calls for China to allow a single Church that accepts the authority of the Pope.

By Joseph M. Kung, March 23, 2005

This is a letter written to the Ambassador from the People's Republic of China to the USA and it includes addresses so that you can join the worldwide effort to petition the Chinese government for the release of prisoners of religious conscience.

Reprint from the Asian Wall Street Journal, OpEd page - February 4, 1998

This article, written by Joseph Kung, addresses the first American religious delegation to investigate the numerous reports of widespread religious persecution in China.

by Margaret Chu

This is a true-life experience of the author. She spent 23 years in jail and in the labor camp. In 1979, while still in the labor camp, Margaret, almost miraculously, received permission to leave China to join her brother, Joseph Kung, in America. Margaret wanted to share her experience with you to give you more insight into the condition of the thousands of Catholics in China. Unfortunately, the persecution is still ongoing. Some of her friends are still in labor camps. Many are in great poverty because they missed the education and career opportunities as ex-prisoners.

Rev. Xavier Cai (Tsai), S.J., and Rev. John A. Houle, S.J., are remembered in this informative article.

Joseph Kung reviews recent and current events, with an eye to history and to the future of the faithful underground Catholic Church in China.

Reprint from the New York Times - January 26, 1997 Front Page

This article was published in spite of efforts by the Chinese Communist government to keep foreign reporters from revealing the truth.

A detailed examination of the characteristics and issues of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association.

Chapter 2: Observations
Epilogue

Reprint of an article by Rev. Matthias Lu, Ph.D.,S/Th.L. analyzing the Patriotic Association's pastoral letter on women. The article analyzes the language of the document, explains the status and structure of the government approved bishops' conference and critiques the pastoral letter's endorsement of "China's Platform for the Development of Women."

Chinese National Conference
of Roman Catholic Bishops -Pastoral Letter

Saluting both the 700th anniversary of the mission of Blessed John of Monte Corvino, the first archbishop of Peking (Beijing), and the fifth anniversary of the Chinese National Conference of Roman Catholic Bishops, this pastoral letter was released January 31, 1995 by the Roman Catholic bishops in China through the Cardinal Kung Foundation in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. (Since the Roman Catholic Church is illegal in China, this pastoral letter could not be released there publicly.)
Following an account of the history of the Chinese Church, the bishops analyze the differences between the Roman Catholic Church in China and the government sanctioned Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association - which does not maintain ties with Rome and the Pope - as well as the distinction between their respective representative bodies, the National Conference of Roman Catholic Bishops and the China Catholic Bishops' College. Arguing that "no member of the clergy of the universal Church is permitted to be in sacramental communion" with the Patriotic Association or the China Bishops' College, the bishops call for prayers that their "separated brothers and sisters" may "return home to the universal Church ruled by our sovereign Pontiff."

The Holy Father requests prayers for the suffering Roman Catholic Church in China.

This is a paraphrase of an assortment of essays received from the underground Roman Catholic faithful on the celebration of the Month of Mary in Dong Lu, Hubei province, China.

Supernatural Occurrences in Dong Lu, China - May, 1995

Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association's representation and the West's need for cautious process in evangelizing China.

Both letters were written by the late Rev. Camille Graff, S.J. who was a missionary working in the Diocese of Shanghai under Bishop Kung before his incarceration by the Chinese Government. Rev. Graff was expelled from China in the early 1950's, and worked subsequently in Taiwan for many years. The first letter commemorates Bishop Kung's 30th anniversary of his imprisonment. The second letter reiterates the author's unwavering belief in Bishop Kung's faith and allegiance to the Pope after the media speculated otherwise on the occasion of Bishop Kung's release from prison in 1985. These two letters were originally written in French, and were translated into English by an unknown person.

On May 27th 1995, we celebrated Cardinal Kung's triple anniversaries. This article, reprinted from AMERICA magazine, recounts the celebration and the price of religious freedom.

On two occasions in 1995, reports circulated that Pope John Paul II had concelebrated Holy Mass with Chinese Patriotic Association priests. We should be more judicious in reading the news report.

Archbishop of Canton

A symbol of the suffering Roman Catholic Church in China, His Excellency passed away on June 27th, 1995. Archbishop Tang was imprisoned by the Chinese Government for 22 years because of his refusal to renounce his faith in Roman Catholicism and his obedience to the Pope.

This account was written by a Little Sister of the Poor of St. Ann's Novitiate following a visit by Cardinal Ignatius Kung to Queen of Peace Residence on August 30, 1993, feast of Blessed Jeanne Jugan - Foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

The communist...took the ciborium and threw it on the floor with all of the Sacred Hosts spilling out...a small girl...saw every thing...the little girl came back...There she made a holy hour...After her holy hour she...bent over and with her tongue received Jesus in Holy Communion...The little girl continued to come back each night...to receive Jesus in Holy Communion on her tongue. On the thirty-second night, after she had consumed the last and thirty-second host, she accidentally made a noise and the guard...caught her and beat her to death.
